Because we now live in a world where ‘the land of the free’ is only free until you do something the majority dislike, it seems that Texas teenager Justin Carter has been jailed following a violent-themed joke back in February.
During a heated argument regarding MMO ‘League of Legends‘ with a friend on his Facebook account, Justin Carter jokingly responded with ‘Oh yeah, I’m real messed up in the head, I’m going to go shoot up a school full of kids and eat their still, beating hearts,’ followed by the terms ‘lol’ and ‘jk’. It should go without saying that this was simply a joke – a dark one at that, but just a joke and I’m sure we’ve all seen people with dark humour and trolls make similar remarks elsewhere online before.
Unfortunately, a Canadian woman who saw the post called the police after viewing his address and worrying that he lived close to an elementary school, so Justin was jailed a month later and has been so since (including on his 19th birthday.)
With a court hearing on July 1st and his parents setting up an online petition to convince their local Attorney to release their son, Justin has been charged with making a terrorist threat and if convicted, will face an eight year-long prison sentence. For a joke. Made on the internet.
That’s some tasty lookin’ ignorance of the 1st Amendment right there!
