Aaru’s Awakening: This Hand-Drawn 2D Platformer Will Be Your Next Favourite Game Ever

So far this year, my time  has been dedicated to awaiting the release of Guacamelee! (which was, needless to say, fantastic) and the upcoming Owlboy game. Then along came Aaru’s Awakening.

Created by the Icelandic indie team Lumenox, Aaru’s Awakening is a 2D action platformer with the most gorgeously unique hand-drawn graphical style since Rayman Origins. The first thing that inescapably springs out to me with this game is its charm. Even at its current alpha stage, the graphics make my eyes want to melt and the beautiful animations have already caused me to throw money at my screen.

Taking place in a world called Lumenox, the balance of the domains Dawn, Day, Dusk and Night is being destroyed by Night and it’s your job as Aaru – the champion of Dawn – to complete tasks and explore the in-game universe (filled with interesting and quirky inhabitants from each domain) to set your world right again. We’re promised a rich story with dreamy music and narrative cutscenes – and frankly, it all sounds so lovely that it already makes my stomach tingle.

With two gameplay mechanics key to most of the levels and challenges – a teleportation and charge ability – the game’s playable alpha (download here) alone is enough to make me squirm. You can upvote the game via its Steam Greenlight page, but whether this game hits Steam or not, I can guarantee you that this PC/Mac/Linux game aimed for a Fall release will be your next favourite thing ever.
