EA Closes Maxis Emeryville Studio

2000px-Maxis_logo_new.svgToday is not a good day for Maxis.

Guillaume Pierre (lead gameplay scripter and designer for SimCity) has today revealed via his personal Twitter account that EA has, somewhat unexpectedly, shut down the Maxis Emeryville studio.

Serving as both the headquarters and founding studio for Maxis, the Emeryville studio has been responsible for such games as The Sims, The Sims 2, Spore, SimCity and DarkSpore. Although information is very sparse at the moment, Pierre hints towards the entire team now being out of a job and perhaps partially pointing blame at the SimCity release controversy in 2013.

Whatever the case may be, our thoughts go to all of those at Maxis Emeryville that may potentially be out of work now – you guys absolutely deserved better and we wish you the best of luck.

UPDATE: After some mild confusion caused by this news, we feel it’s important to restate that only Maxis’ Emeryville studio is shutting its doors. The Sims franchise has been developed by The Sims Studio for some time now and development of The Sims 4 remains unaffected.
